Stuck in the application?

What each application status means, the two ways to finish identity verification, and how to upload documents that get accepted the first time.

Most applications go through in minutes. When yours doesn't, the status tells you what's happening and what to do next.

What the status means

  • Processing your application: your submission is being handled. This usually takes less than a minute.

  • Application under review: your application is being reviewed at Interactive Brokers, which holds Lumina accounts. Nothing is needed from you, and we'll notify you when it's done. If you were asked for documents, review usually finishes within a day.

  • Identity verification needed: automatic verification couldn't confirm your details. See the next section.

  • Approved: you're all set.

  • We couldn't approve your application: see the last section.

If we couldn't verify your identity automatically

Most applicants are verified automatically, with no documents at all. When that isn't possible, you'll see We couldn't verify your identity and two options. Either one works:

  • Verify instantly walks you through confirming your identity and address in a secure session. If the session times out, resume it and pick up where you left off.

  • Upload documents lets you provide proof of identity and proof of address yourself.

Getting documents accepted the first time

  • The upload screen lists which document types are accepted for each requirement. That list is authoritative: a document outside it will be declined, with a message telling you why.

  • Pick the document type and add the expiry date if the document has one. If a single document also shows your address, mark "this document also confirms my address" and skip the second upload.

  • You can take a photo, choose one from your library, or attach a file — a PDF or an image, up to 10 MB each.

  • An accepted document shows as received and being processed. Review usually finishes within a day.
